2020 Ottawa Home and Remodelling Show: Doing renos right

From DIY guru Bryan Baeulmer to local renovation and design experts, the main stage at the upcoming 2020 Ottawa Home and Remodelling Show is all about getting that home improvement project right.

Add a cavalcade of exhibitors, workshops and special features, and the show running Jan. 23 to 26 at the EY Centre is your ticket to a new and better home.

Main stage presenters this year include:

Bryan Baeumler: The star of Island of Bryan, the popular HGTV series about the saga Baeulmer and his wife, Sarah, experienced while restoring an abandoned resort in the Bahamas, will talk about the project, lessons learned and the value hiding inside your own home. Baeulmer is an engaging, approachable speaker who doesn’t mind using his own mistakes as teaching tools for others. Friday, Jan. 24, 6 to 7 p.m. & Saturday, Jan. 25, 1 to 2 p.m.

Chris Palmer: Always a favourite speaker at Ottawa home shows, Palmer is a professional industrial designer turned carpenter, contractor and all-round DIY guy. His company builds everything from custom furniture to home additions. Sought-after for his knowledge of home renovation tips, Palmer will speak about renovation education. Friday, Jan. 24, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. & Saturday, Jan. 25, 4 to 5 p.m.

Sue Pitchforth: The Ottawa-based owner of Décor Therapy Plus is an international award-winning designer, eight-time Readers’ Choice Winner, workshop leader and home design columnist. She’ll help you chill out with her talk about de-stressing your decorating. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2 to 3 p.m. & Sunday, Jan. 26, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Greg Simpson: An architectural designer with Ottawa’s multi-award-winning Amsted Design-Build, Simpson draws from his extensive experience in small and major renovations, additions, and custom home building. He will speak about applying today’s renovation trends to your home. Thursday, Jan. 23, 5 to 6 p.m. & Friday, Jan. 24, 3 to 4 p.m.

Lagois Design-Build-Renovate: The company’s main-stage presentation, How to Love Where You Live, features an expert panel comprised of Lagois staff responsible for various stages of the renovation process. They’ll provide advice and solutions for your next remodelling project. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Anita Murray: Murray is co-founder of AllThingsHome.ca, Ottawa’s only comprehensive source of unbiased information on buying, renovating and maintaining your home. The veteran journalist and former homes editor at the Ottawa Citizen has covered the local housing industry since 2011. Murray will speak about the always-timely topic of keeping your reno from going off the rails. Thursday, Jan. 23, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. & Sunday, Jan. 26, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Emma Terrell: Terrell, a.k.a. The Urban Botanist, is all about bringing the outdoors in with self-sustaining ecosystems like terrariums. She’s also a proponent of plant therapy and the value of working with horticulture in an urban setting. Terrell’s intriguingly titled talk is How to Easily Change Your Home into a Jungle Oasis. Thursday, Jan. 23, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. & Saturday, Jan. 25, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Guy Solomon: The founder and CEO of the renovation business Penguin Basements will cover maximizing space or generating extra income with your basement. Saturday, Jan. 25, 11:30 to 12:30 p.m.

Emma Doucet: Doucet is a multi-award-winning designer and owner of Ottawa’s Grassroots Design + Build, which specializes in the creative renovation of older homes. Her talk is Don’t be afraid! Designing and decorating with colour. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2 to 3 p.m.

Over 130 exhibitors will be at the show, including renovators, kitchen and bath suppliers, window companies and others. There are workshops on power tools, furniture makeovers and air plant terrariums. Other features include the Refreshed Furniture Pop-Up Shop: Winter Edition, with refinished items by local artists.
