Invite Mother Nature in: Adding nature to your decor

“Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.”
— poet Gary Snyder

Is it time to feather your nest and invite Mother Nature in?

You can add beauty and whimsy by incorporating nature-inspired elements. By bringing a piece of nature inside, you’ll create a more natural environment that can help reduce stress and boost your mood. Plus, it’s fun!

For those who live in the city, we may not always have the opportunity to be close to nature. That is why it’s so important to bring nature indoors. I hope this article will inspire you to do just that.

One of my favourite ways to bring nature indoors in my home is by adding birds into my decor through accessories. It’s amazing how just adding a couple of birds into your space will transform the energy in it and, in turn, you.

Here are some examples:

Cushions can be added to a bed, chair or couch for an inexpensive update, and a bird teapot and tray with birds and flowers are perfect for entertaining.

Artwork with birds can lighten up any room.

I love collecting feathers. As I come across them, I bring them home and incorporate them into my decor. This is one of my favourite ways: adding feathers to a vintage, silver pitcher. It’s simple, yet beautiful.

Birds have a special place in vignettes around my home. This one, in my living room, is probably one of my favourites.

Another great way to bring nature indoors is by using plants, moss, branches, birch logs and birds nests in your decor.

Moss art is a popular look right now and, luckily, it doesn’t need any care. Here is an example created by Lana Doss, The Fine Gardener:

I love how she paired it with existing art in the bathroom. They were made for each other.

Be creative. You can also add moss to a mirror to create something totally unique.

I enjoy using vases all year in different ways. Naturally, my favourite is when I am given a gift of fresh flowers. But I also love creating arrangements for myself using nature’s bounty such as different types of branches and leaves. Here is one I just created for spring/summer. I really like the “lightness” of it:

Terrariums in different sizes and types of jars and bowls are another way to enjoy living with nature in your home.

These small living arrangements bring life to your space. Best of all, they are very easy to take care of.

This last example below is by far my favourite, incorporating so many different natural elements into this space. Lana Doss graciously agreed to show me how she created this wonderful birdcage vignette and how it finished off her living room in a beautiful way. She used grapevine, small branches, moss, an actual bird nest, feathers, rocks, mini lights and a bird to create her bit of nature.

Follow along the process:

I hope I have inspired you to look at nature differently and given you ideas on how you can invite Mother Nature in. Go for a walk, pick up something that speaks to you and bring it home.  You’ll have the beginning of your own natural vignette. Have fun on your nature journey.
