If your garden needs a rethink, or your yard is a blank slate, Lavender & Twigs Garden Design has the answer. Combining tried-and-true garden performers with a fresh approach and the added advantage of 3D design technology so you can actually see what your property will look like, Lavender & Twigs offers a welcome solution to your outdoor space.
The company was formed in 2020 by garden lovers Cheryl Hammond-Hutcheson and Linda Robinson. Driven by a passion to create beautiful garden spaces, they brought their extensive experience in the business world to their new endeavour.
Their focus
Lavender & Twigs is a boutique shop focusing on bespoke landscape and garden design, helping clients define and realize their vision through exceptional customer service and state-of-the-art 3D modelling technology. Free consultations, personal service and advice are all part of the process, along with a commitment to clients from the start of the design stage, through completion of the job, to after-sales service.
“Ongoing communication with our clients throughout all stages of the process has become a big part of our success,” says Hammond-Hutcheson. “In 2021, we saw the design and installation of many new gardens, as well as various renovations on existing gardens. It was a busy but fulfilling season, demonstrating a real need for a more personalized business model in Ottawa and surrounding communities.”
Who they are
Hammond-Hutcheson and Robinson shared a life-long love of spending time outside working in all types of gardens. Wanting to learn more about the profession came naturally to both.
Hammond-Hutcheson spent much of her working life in media and corporate sales. Semi-retiring in 2020, her goal was to develop skills in personal areas of interest. Driving her gardening passion is the inspiration of clean lines in design, combined with plants and shrubs featuring large, showy blooms — think hydrangeas, peonies and mallow, for instance.
Robinson, who is a successful Realtor in the Ottawa area, supports the partnership with both design work and execution. “My designs reflect my love of English gardens and fondness for roses,” she says.
Growing together
In mid-2020, Robinson and Hammond-Hutcheson completed several garden and landscape design courses, expanding their knowledge of design principles and professional planting design.
“It was a busy and exciting time as we immersed ourselves in lectures, homework, research and mathematics,” says Robinson. Finishing the courses in 2021, they were then able to put their skills to work for the 2021 season.
They work in a small group that includes homeowners, when they want to be involved in the process. “There is a sense of teamwork on each job site as everyone enjoys seeing the project through from start to finish,” says Hammond-Hutcheson.
Continued visits after work is completed ensures gardens and other elements are growing and working together as planned.
What they offer
Along with full design services, Lavender & Twigs works with third-party landscapers to ensure designs are completed according to plan.
Hammond-Hutcheson and Robinson are also excited to introduce state-of-the-art technology to their process that provides 3D modelling of designs.
“This is key to bringing outdoor spaces to life with graphics, movement, colour and texture,” says Hammond-Hutcheson. “It is simply the best way to showcase the potential of your outdoor living space and how it will look when your plants have matured.”
