Canadian Home Builders’ Association Awards: Ottawa finalists abound

Local builders and renovators have made a strong showing thanks to 21 nominations for the 2019 Canadian Home Builders’ Association Awards.

Those nominations highlight the diversified strength of the industry, with entries ranging from production and custom homes to a Net Zero project, multiple renovations, websites, and more.

Energy efficiency and style

RND Construction, a familiar face among national, provincial and local award winners, is up in two categories: detached production homes, 2,501 to 3,000 square feet, and Net Zero Home, both of them with Christopher Simmonds Architect.

The Net Zero entry, a stylish, modern-themed home in Alta Vista that produces as much energy as it consumes, is important because “it shows what we’re doing is leading-edge across Canada,” says RND president Roy Nandram. As well, Nandram, a long-time green advocate, built the home known as Crestview on spec with the intention of selling it, “so I’m putting my money where my mouth is.”

More new homes

Minto Communities has two finalists: The Kinghurst in the under 1,800 square feet category and The Stanley for homes 2,201 to 2,500 square feet. Models of both homes are available for viewing at Avalon Encore in Orléans.

Mizrahi Developments’ 1451 Wellington is a luxury condo project.

eQ Homes, with West of Main, is a finalist for The Rosewood (low-rise attached under 1,500 square feet). eQ is up for three awards, including two in marketing categories.

Also in the running: Mizrahi Developments’ upscale 1451 Wellington condo project at Wellington and Island Park Drive; custom homes by Cada Construction and Art House Developments; and Larco Homes with Christopher Simmonds Architect for an attached project.

Renovations galore

Amsted Design-Build, another regular award winner, is competing in two categories: kitchens under $70,000 and basements.

The basement project, which was also a finalist in last fall’s Ottawa Housing Design Awards, still tickles Amsted president Steve Barkhouse. “What’s really cool are the hidden design features and how they achieve the owners’ dream,” he says. Those features include an exercise room and a sewing area that are both concealed behind panel doors or wainscoting and that open up to connect the spaces to the rest of the basement. There’s also a sleek, built-in turtle tank.

Another Ottawa renovator, Lagois Design-Build-Renovate, has joined forces with Laurysen Kitchens to compete with Amsted in the kitchen category. Lagois is also a finalist in the category of Whole House – $300,001 to $500,000. Lagois was named Renovator of the Year at the recent Ottawa awards.

Just Basements’ “Epic Entertaining” project is an awards finalist.

Ottawa’s Just Basements is among the finalists, up against Amsted in the basement category. And the company’s sister business, ARTium Design Build, is a finalist for Whole House renovation, $150,000 to $300,000. Both have previously won awards locally or elsewhere.

Speaking about both his companies being finalists, president Norm Lecuyer says: “We’ve always believed that there is just good design, and the people and methodology we use equate across both (companies).”

Hierarchy Development & Design is also in the running for two awards, stemming from the same project. One nomination is for a bathroom and the other for Whole House – over $1 million.

Digital and more

Tartan Homes has gotten the nod as a finalist in the website category for its innovative online design centre, which simplifies home buyers’ selection of design options. The design tool was named a winner at last fall’s SAM marketing awards put on by the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association. Also in the running for the website award: Mizrahi Developments’ 1451 Wellington.

eQ Homes is up for two marketing awards. The builder is a finalist in the Design/Decor Centre and the Sales Office – Low-Rise categories. The sales office is at eQ’s popular eQuinelle golf course community in Kemptville.

In all, the association this year received over 700 entries in 38 categories.

Winners will be announced at a gala event on May 10.
