Several Ottawa developers are finalists for the 2018 EnerQuality awards honouring energy-efficient home building across the province.
RND Construction leads the Ottawa pack, being named a finalist in three categories: Building Innovation Low Rise, R-2000 Home Builder of the Year, and Best Green Marketing Campaign.
“We need to raise awareness about energy efficiency,” says the company’s president, Roy Nandram, who sees the awards as a way to elevate that awareness among buyers and builders alike. Like other environmentally committed builders, he knows high-performance homes reduce greenhouse gas emissions that induce climate change while also being more comfortable and costing less to heat and cool.
A green marketing campaign has a role in this, he says. Not only does a successful campaign help sell homes, “it really does something for awareness in the market about energy efficiency.” Nandram’s award submission in the green marketing category is for RND’s Farmside Green and Riverpark Green projects.
Builders compete in multiple categories
Ottawa’s Urbandale Construction is another finalist for this year’s EnerQuality awards. The company is competing with RND and others in the low-rise innovation category. Urbandale’s hat is also in the ring for the Energy Star for New Home Builder of the Year award (mid-sized builder).
The company’s submission in the innovation category focused on its Proud Foundation Insulation system. It “eliminates the possibility of condensation forming on the inside of the basement wall, ensuring a warm and comfortable living space below grade,” says general manager Peter Weiss.
Among large builders, Richcraft Homes is taking on four other companies, including Minto Group in the Energy Star for New Home Builder of the Year award category.
Minto is also a finalist for the Ontario Green Builder of the Year award, while Tamarack’s Jacqueline Collier is one of six finalists for the Builder Achievement Award.
EnerQuality certifies energy-efficient homes in Canada, including Energy Star construction, and has been giving various awards for two decades.
Winners in all categories will be announced Feb. 22.
